Love What You Do… And Rest Will Follow

John Gruber of Daring Fireball points out that lowest common denominator is such an easy addiction.

“What’s so great, so amazing, about this racket is that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can obsess over your work, build an audience based on deep mutual respect, and eventually opportunities to earn money from it will present themselves. I don’t know how it works, I only know that it does.”

It just is harder, and we live in a society which is constantly looking for easy-ways out!

What’s scary is that I’ve been able to live this statement. It’s not quite what one would expect, but hey, if someone’s willing to pay me well for what I do, I’m not gonna argue :)

I saw that post earlier today and frankly, it reinforced my decision in Oct. ’08 to leave the company I was working for (6+ years) to work on my own initiatives. Probably the craziest thing to do during economic times such as these but it was also the best thing I could have done.

Bottom line: financially I’m not there yet, but I have more time doing the things I love, and more time being around those I love. I don’t think I could trade that in for anything else (especially pure financial gain). My health has improved because of it. I thank you and Gruber for being such great talents.

Cheers,

John

I simply love the template that you use for your blog – it has very adventurous/sophisticated look to it especially the bottom portion of it.

Dameon,

Having known you for so long, I have to say that you have had to follow a tough path and it is really difficult at times for people to stay true to the mission. I know you have and the rewards will follow. I know that for sure. I think what John Gruber says — more people should follow.

I know it is a tough decision to make, but your saying that your health has improved – i am also betting mental peace as well – that’s what makes worth it. Good for you is all I can say. I am glad you connected with rest of your life :-)

You and I can totally agree on the talented mr. gruber. :-)

Some people have had a much tougher time than I have. I consider myself quite fortunate, all things considered :)

Hopefully my current transitionary phase will end soon. These last 6 months at Nokia have been a challenge, but I’ve also seen our team continue to perform exceptionally well despite all the uncertainty. That and everyone’s support have made this a lot easier than it could have been.
